Intoxicated man allegedly attacks police officer in Shaftsbury

SHAFTSBURY — An intoxicated 27-year-old man from New York attempted to flee the scene and assaulted a police officer after being stopped for erratic driving in Shaftsbury, Saturday night.

Police identified the man as Jacob M Shortt, 27, from Cambridge, New York.

Police stopped Shortt’s vehicle for operating erratically on Myers Road at approximately 8:20 p.m.

While investigating the incident, Shortt attempted to flee the scene and police quickly apprehended him after a short foot pursuit.

While attempting to take the man into custody, Shortt tried to assault the police officer.

Shortt was subdued and during the investigation, police determined that he was operating under the influence of alcohol.

The New York man refused to provide a roadside breathalyzer and was transported and processed at the Shaftsbury Barracks.

He was later released with a citation ordering him to appear in the Bennington County Superior Court to answer to charges of DUI and assaulting a police officer.
